Steelers beat Outlaws 2010 NFC final
Aug 31, 2010, 11:02 am

Record staff SAULT STE. MARIE — The Sault Ste. Marie Steelers rode Josh Gauthier’s four touchdowns en route to a 35-4 romp over the Tri-City Outlaws as they claimed their third Northern Football Conference title in four years. Gauthier bulldozed his way to 206 yards in Saturday’s title game played in the Sault. The real sore point for the Outlaws wasn’t their inability to contain Gauthier, but their work on special teams, said Tri-City coach Chris Newsome. The Steelers amassed 187 yards on returns, to Tri-City’s 52. “We may not get the eight coaches that the Sault has but six coaches would be nice,” said Newsome who added his staff of three coaches isn’t able to devote much time to special teams. The Waterloo Region-based Outlaws will also have to work hard to secure homefield advantage for the final next season, Newsome said. The two sides have hooked up the past four seasons in the championship, with the home team winning each time. Tri-City’s Jon Nedeljkovic, who like Gauthier cracked the 1,000-yard rushing barrier this season, rambled to 56 yards on the ground on 18 carries Saturday. Outlaws quarterback Jeff Nosal completed 11 passes for 170 yards. The Steelers rang up 302 yards of offence to Tri-City’s 239. Domenic Camastro accounted for all of Tri-City’s scoring with a rouge and an 18-yard field goal. The Sault, which held a narrow 9-4 lead at the half, advances to the Canadian senior football final in Red Deer, Alta. on Sept. 25.

Steelers vs. Outlaws: Fear and loathing in the NFC final

By Christine Rivet, Record staff

KITCHENER — Inquiring minds want to know.

Just why are the Tri-City Outlaws the Northern Football Conference’s most hated team?

“For one thing, our players speak their minds,” explained Outlaws head coach Chris Newsome.

“And we are only 45 minutes away from anyone in the league who cares to watch us,” added Newsome whose Outlaws aren’t just a nickname.

In the NFC, at least, Outlaw is a state of being.

For the fourth straight year, the NFC’s title game features a grudge match between perhaps the league’s most despised team and undeniably, it’s most mysterious.

Much like the Outlaws, the Sault Ste. Marie Steelers are a veteran-laden and well-coached outfit, with one significant difference.

“The Sault is eight hours away. You don’t really know what’s going on up there,” said Newsome.

The loop’s two premier teams invite fear and loathing for good reason.

Their records speak for themselves. The 7-1 (won-lost) Steelers and the 6-2 Outlaws finished one-two in league standings. . . as usual.

The Waterloo Region-based Outlaws were the only squad to tame the Steelers this season, with a 21-17 victory on July 31.

Both teams feature powerful and quick running backs expected to dictate the pace of play in Saturday’s championship game in the Sault.

Tri-City’s Jon Nedeljkovic and Steelers Josh Gauthier each cracked the 1,000 yards rushing plateau this season.

The Steelers are reigning NFC and national champs, while Tri-City has not claimed the NFC title since 2008.

All of it makes for an intriguing matchup on Saturday.

The winner of Saturday’s contest advances to the Canadian senior football final in Red Deer, Alta. on Sept. 25

Off to their FOURTH straight NFC Championship!!!
Aug 23, 2010, 10:23 pm

On a wet and soggy night in Kitchener the Outlaws took to the field determined to defeat the Raiders, and earn their spot in the NFC Championship for the fourth straight year. A missed Tri City field goal, near the end of the first half, was returned 120 yards for a TD which evened the score at 14 – 14 going into the half. Under less than ideal conditions both teams struggled to build any type of momentum and relied heavily on the run game. The Outlaws carried a 21 – 14 lead into the fourth quarter and with about 52 seconds left in the game were faced with a fourth and goal from the Raiders seven yard line. Having missed two relatively easy field goals earlier in the game, in which one cost them a TD, the Outlaws looked to cement their birth in the NFC Championship by going for it. On a smooth play action pass, quarterback Jeff Nosal connected with wide receiver Aron Froese for the touchdown. The Outlaws would have their extra point attempt blocked leaving them ahead 27 – 14. The Raiders explosive offense was held in check during the final seconds giving the Outlaws reason to celebrate!

The Outlaws will now travel to lovely northern Ontario to battle with their much respected rivals, the Sault Ste. Marie Steelers. Game time is set for 7:00pm at Rocky Dipietro Field where the atmosphere should be electric!

Outlaws roll over Longhorns!!!!
Aug 15, 2010, 4:16 pm

The Tri City Outlaws defeated the Oakville Longhorns 44 - 9 on Saturday evening in front of a supportive and energetic crowd.  The Outlaws looked a little uncomfortable in the first half and struggled to get things rolling taking just a 13 - 3 lead into halftime.  Without starting QB, Jeff Nosal and RB Jon Nedeljkovic, or RB Marvin Williams, the Outlaws were forced to organize a committee to handle the ground game.  The defense also struggled early as they played without starting Safety Dustin McKenna, LB Mark Armstrong, and DE Corey McArthur.  However, with a veteran squad and lots of depth in their lineup, it didn't take long for the Outlaws to rally and get their A game out, which led to 31 second half points.  The most dominant O-line in the NFC aka The Grand River Transit, paved the way for each and every running back, moving up and down the field at will, accounting for 3 touchdowns on the night! Backup QB Bryan Rosekat was able to support the powerful run game with two passing touchdowns as well.  Veteran QB Domenic Camastro also added a late passing TD. The Outlaws also added a field goal and converted on 5 of 6 extra point attempts. The defense was as relentless as normal and managed to limit the Longhorns on the scoreboard for the evening.

With the win, the Outlaws will advance to the NFC Semi Finals where they will host the Toronto Raiders. Kickoff is set to go at 7PM on Saturday August 21st, and the Outlaws will return to the cozy confines of Centennial Stadium in Kitchener.
